Knitting Fails

My sister-in-law mentioned to me that my mom wanted a new winter hat and I didn’t think I would have time to do anything with that gift idea so I didn’t take it. Come December 21 and I thought I would give it a go. I had Berroco Flicker in Odile (brown) that I thought she would like and the Techno Hat pattern downloaded and ready. I had failed to increase the brim size before so I thought I would just follow the pattern as it was written. I knitted for a night and a morning and was thrilled to be finishing up. Although as I tied in the last tail, I realized there was no way that hat was stretching for an adult sized head. It was for an infant. Good thing I know this cutie pie.

Now it is Sunday afternoon and I won’t see my mom for Christmas until December 27 so I still thought I had time. I didn’t have enough of the Odile left but I had thrown in an older pink color way that I had just in case so I thought I would just make a pink hat with a brown stripe. This times measured my head because I thought the brim was the problem, and did some math to figure out how many stitches to cast on. I was off. I tripled the last rib section and started the crown. Again as I was weaving in my ends of a finished hat I thought this looks short, and I had indeed made a skull cap or hat for a five your old child with a wide head.

Hats are not my thing. I should stick to cowls – like this finished Millwater Cowl, which was not a knitting fail. Yay!

Race to the Finish – Baby Blanket

Baby Mentrikoski is due to arrive in March, but the shower was this past weekend. The invitations went out right before Thanksgiving, which was when I accepted the challenge to finish both a baby quilt and a knitted baby blanket (I challenged myself).

I bought the materials the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and started immediately, dedicating all of Thanksgiving break to knitting (and the stomach flu).

photo 1

I spent most nights excited by my progress as I added new stripes. Each time I was excited to add a stripe I was so sad to see all the skeins still left in the knitting basket.

photo 3

The last two were the hardest because I just kept thinking I was a little closer than I was. Despite all that work, I still had some to add the morning of the shower. I set to work in the car.

You can see the pup under the blanket there because she was on my lap too. Even though we sat in a parking lot for a little less than a half hour to allow me to finish, we were not late for the shower and the blanket was all finished.

car knitting

The colors look different in all the photos, but I think it is more like the colors in the car shot. I went with purple (future dad’s favorite color) and aqua. I used the Lorelei Blanket pattern again.

Mentrikoski Baby Blanket

I hope the blanket has many snuggle sessions in its future.

Race to the Finish – Baby Quilt

I made the opposite Big Start Quilt for my second niece using the tutorial for the Giant Vintage Star on In Color Order since it comes together so quickly.

photo 3

I quilted a shadow of the star and then continued to follow that line with varying widths between the stitching (in pink of course).

photo 1

I shrunk size of the triangles a little so it was baby quilt sized and then backed it was Minky fabric to make it super cuddly.

back quilt

I’m having some technological difficulties and can not crop the photo (or rotate) so you see my helpers legs sticking out the wrong way. Ooops.

I can’t wait to meet the little girl.

Project 365 – November

November

So close to a whole year! Only one month to go. I switched to my iPhone versus my iPad since my iPad apps keep crashing and it is much easier to manage since my photos are also on my iPhone. My Project Life definitely suffered this year though and I like the end result of Project Life better, so I’m not sure what to do next year. Ideas?

Millwater Cowl

Started something new…
Untitled

Shocking it is a cowl. I’m using the Millwater pattern, Spud and Chloe yarn, and the Counter Man App.

Untitled

It is cracking me up because its default is to count cars in two colors. My nephew loves cars and lining them up in matching colors so I left it that way even though it makes no sense for knitting.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Grecian Rib Scarf (almost completed)

Happy Mothers Day, Mom! I know it is technically your birthday but I just finished your Mother’s Day gift that you saw as yarn last Thanksgiving. Oops, sorry for the delay.

Untitled

It is now a full scarf with tassels and everything. I just need to block it so that it can lay flat and stop curling and then it can keep your neck warm – just in time for winter.

Untitled

I used Purl Bee’s Grecian Rib Scarf tutorial and Madeline Tosh’s DK weight yarn in Vermillion. I like how squishy the yarn and pattern make this scarf. I didn’t like how little the needles were (size 5) which made it feel like I was getting no where on this project.

I hope you enjoy it, Mom. Happy Mother’s Day and Happy Birthday (although you get that present when I see you later this week).

Project 365 – October

October

A little heavy on the dog pictures this month when you look at it all together. I just can’t help it.

Gradient Cowl

Untitled

I finally finished my next cowl. This was my travel project from the summer and it suffered from having my needles cut in international security so it was exciting to finish this cowl up, especially now that it is fall and time to wear it.

Untitled

I used Shibui’s Gradient pattern available online here.

Untitled

I debated on the order of the colors the whole time I was making this cowl and like the way it came out. One of the first steps of making the cowl is to wind the yarn into three equal sized balls. I don’t know that I spent enough time on that step hence the different sized stripes.

Untitled

I like the random sizes, but it was not super fun wondering how much yarn I would have for each section. Oh well. All done now.

Happy Fall!

Project 365 – September

September

I feel like I was lazy this month, but really what I have noticed is when I have more due dates at work I am less motivated to finish projects at home. Oh well.

Happy October everyone!
